Four people with ALS or stroke had a tiny sensor in the motor cortex — the part of the brain that plans speech. The team found that just imagining speaking creates a fainter version of the same brain signals as trying to speak. A computer learned to turn that silent inner speech into words in real time (it nails a small word list well; a giant vocabulary is harder). Participants liked it — imagining took far less effort than straining to speak.
